A Note on Our Practices and Expectations
Every business across the globe faces criticism when we fall short of meeting everyone’s expectations. Zuma’s is no different. We know we are not perfect — sometimes things don’t go as planned, and mistakes happen. What matters is that our intentions always remain rooted in what is best for the true residents of Zuma’s: the animals.
At Zuma’s, we have specific methods and values that guide how we care for and interact with our herd. We recognize that not everyone may share these views, but if you choose to engage with our community, we ask that you honor our practices:
Respecting the Horse’s Choice: We ask for permission before touching a horse. Horses feel the pause and honoring their timeline creates trust.
Haltering & Leading: We halter from the side, not the front, and lead shoulder-to-shoulder without pulling pressure or allowing a horse to trail behind.
Weight Limits: We honor the AMAVA guideline of no more than 15% of a horse’s body weight (including tack). Balanced, experienced riders may have slight variance.
Riding Practices: We primarily ride bitless. Whips are used only as an extension of the rider’s reach — never as punishment — and spurs are not allowed.
Community Expectations:
Kindness first — mistreatment of animals, staff, or fellow community members is not tolerated.
If you make a mess, please clean up after yourself (including Boomers’ Room and restrooms).
For safety, all drivers must abide by the 5 MPH speed limit on ranch grounds.
We understand that in today’s world of online reviews, people sometimes use the digital space as a platform for one-sided experiences. While we cannot control that, we remain steadfast in our mission. At Zuma’s, we will always prioritize the well-being of our animals first.
If at times this means we don’t meet every human want or expectation, we will not apologize for putting the herd’s health, safety, and dignity at the center of everything we do.
