Partnership will provide much needed funding for animal sanctuary and Equine Assisted Learning Center in Denver Metro Area.
Sheridan, Colorado April 25, 2016 — The Sheridan Celebrates Committee has selected Zuma’s Rescue Ranch as their Charity Partner for Sheridan Celebrates the Wild, Wild West held on Saturday, September 24, 2016. Each year, Sheridan Celebrates honors the unique history and promotes business development opportunities within this region of the Denver Metro Area. Sheridan Celebrates includes an annual Parade through a Sheridan residential neighborhood, the Sheridan Idol Contest – a phased singing contest in the style of American Idol, and a festival including over 80 exhibitor booths. The Parade includes floats, equestrian, vehicular and walking groups and the festival will include family-friendly activities, fresh food, and live music.
The Sheridan Celebrates Committee recently entered into a fundraising partnership with Zuma’s Rescue Ranch, a nonprofit organization in south metro Denver that serves as a sanctuary and a place of healing for both horses and humans. Proceeds from the Sheridan Idol Contest will provide Zuma’s much needed funding to support their rescue, rehabilitation and placement efforts. Why rescue horses? Since 2007, when the majority of U.S. slaughter plants were closed, an estimated one million horses have been shipped to Canada and Mexico for human consumption. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) currently bans the presence of 379 common equine drugs in animals slaughtered for human consumption. However, there is no procedure in place to ensure that American horses sold to slaughterhouses are free of these FDA-banned drugs. The practice of collecting and shipping horses across the border poses a real human health risk. Not to mention the ill-treatment that these animals undergo to reach their destination for slaughter, such as confinement in semi-trucks for long periods, starvation, abuse and animal cruelty.
Zuma’s Rescue Ranch provides rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming services to equines and other farm animals in need. The Ranch also provides equine assisted learning and counseling services to at-risk youth and adults by pairing them with rescued horses in mutually therapeutic programming (ZEAL). Studies indicate that adults and teens engaging in equine assisted learning show improvements in emotional awareness, stress tolerance, impulse control, problem-solving skills, independence and social responsibility. The benefits are likely due to the nature of the animals as horses are typically non-judgmental and are highly effective at reflecting behaviors of humans. ZEAL can be effective at treating addition, eating disorders, grief/loss, depression and other related conditions.
Sheridan Celebrates the Wild, Wild West will raise funds in support of the organization and there are many ways to participate, such as attending the festival, entering in the Parade, or singing in the Sheridan Idol Contest. This year’s event will be in the theme of the American West, so bring those cowboy boots!
